Sorrel Drink-Video

Out of nowhere I was given a bag of fresh sorrel. Sorrel is a popular drink made at Christmas time in various parts of the Caribbean.  I haven’t had it in a thousand years; what else could I do but make some.  First thing about this drink and how it’s made.  It can be flavored any number of ways with the addition of various spices sweeteners and citrus peel.  The time between preparation and consumption can also vary from a couple of hours to overnight.

Ingredients for  2 liters of sorrel

1 lb Sorrel sepals
1″ of ginger
1-1/2 cups of sugar
2 litres of water

Optional spices
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp ground pimento
2 sticks of cinnamon
1 tbsp orange peel
1 tbsp lemon peel
1 tsp mace

Preparation grate the ginger.  Add the ginger, spices sorrel and water to a pot and rapidly bring to the boil.  Add your own selection of spices to suit your own taste.  You will probably need to experiment with these ingredients until you find the combination that you like.  Allow the mixture to boil for 20 minutes.  Take the mixture off the heat.  Let cool and refrigerate for 24 hours.  After 24 hours, take the mixture out of the fridge and strain.  Served over ice, you can also add rum for additional flavoring.
